Joining the Storied Canvas of the Dumfries and Galloway Fine Art Society
I am thrilled to announce that I have recently joined the management committee of the esteemed Dumfries and Galloway Fine Art Society (DAGFAS), a beacon of artistic expression in southwest Scotland. This society, with its rich history dating back to its founding in 1922, has been a cornerstone of the region’s cultural landscape.
A Century of Artistic Excellence
DAGFAS celebrated its centenary in 2022, marking a hundred years of continuous inspiration and contribution to the arts1. The society was founded by notable figures such as Jessie M. King, E. A. Taylor, and Chris J. Fergusson, and it quickly became a hub for artists of the time, including Scottish Colourist F.C.B. Cadell and Katherine Cameron.
Annual Exhibitions and Beyond
The society is renowned for its annual exhibitions, a tradition upheld every year since its inception, save for a brief hiatus during the Second World War1. These exhibitions showcase the talents of both amateur and professional artists, offering a platform for diverse artistic voices.
Educational Outreach and Workshops
DAGFAS is not just about exhibitions; it’s a vibrant community that fosters learning and development through a winter programme of demonstrations and workshops led by professional artists1. The summer programme offers additional workshops in various media, catering to artists of all skill levels.
Fine Arts on the Road
Looking ahead, DAGFAS is excited to present “FINE ARTS ON THE ROAD” in the spring of 2024, inviting members to submit their artworks for an exhibition that promises to be a highlight of the artistic year1.
A Personal Journey
As a new member of the management committee, I am eager to contribute to the society’s legacy. It’s an honor to be part of an organization that not only celebrates the past but also looks forward to nurturing the future of fine arts in Dumfries and Galloway.
